74th Ocean City Light Tackle Club Derby Fishing days: Sept 12th-15th, 2021 Location: Oregon Inlet, North Carolina Final update; There were 36 participants fishing on 9 boats over the last three days. We had a newly minted member fishing in the tournament, Zach Newton. We have several guests fishing as well including Sasha Motsko and Bo Weisheit. We had one guest fill in for a member who couldn't make it, Heather Melson. The weather was perfect here in Manteo and while the fishing was slower than hoped, we had a great time with some unique firsts! Derby Champions Matt Barrazotto is our Derby Champion with a tournament winning effort including one blue, 1 sail and 2 whites. Second Place went to our west coast member and next year's Derby Chairman, Brian Light. He had a Blue (caught off a rigger clip tied to the tower due to a broken rigger--and i mean broken) and a white which was good for 300 points. Third Place went to Sasha Motsko, our guest angler, also with 300 points with a white and two sailfish. First Place Team went to the father-son team of Richard and Matt Barrazotto. Richard had a great first day going two for two on Whites to ensure both a high daily and a team win for the family. Nice going! First place boat went to the Drifter captained by young William Howell. Pretty work! The Derby was filled with twists and turns. The winning boat caught two blues on day 2. One blue was off the right rigger and the second caught off the tower clip replacing what should have been a left rigger which broke off the boat while teasing up a blue marlin (Brian's was the third blue of the day up behind the Drifter). Drifter went on to replace the rigger overnight and win the Tournament. Another twist was when the Skirt Chaser was fighting three sails at once and lost a transmission early in the day. On a single screw boat, that is a problem. The boat break down took two boats out of the fishing action on day 2 because one boat had to tow the Skirt Chaser to port. They finished their second fishing day on a makeup day while the rest fished a funday on day 4. Thank you to our Derby Chairman, Jim Giles for organizing this event. We also know how much time and effort were contributed by Alexa too, so thank you to the whole family. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 75th Derby which will be held right here in Oregon Inlet in September 2022! That's a wrap.
